The Virginia Demonstration Project (VDP) brings Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) careers to life by engaging students in real world problem-based activities. Through a partnership with the DoD STEM and the Office of Naval Research (ONR), STEM Professionals visit classrooms and co-teach the VDP Modules with middle school teachers. Middle school students build team work and problem solving skills by working together to solve challenges. Through both the in-class and summer academy challenges, STEM Professionals share information about their careers and encourage students to consider pursuing careers in STEM fields.
Since 2004, over 40,000 students and 200 teachers have participated in the program. Over 50 scientists and engineers from two naval warfare laboratories have volunteered to serve as mentors and role models to these students. They work side-by-side with the participating teachers to implement the inquiry-based curriculum.
