William & Mary's STEM Education Alliance began their Virginia K12 STEM outreach in 2005 with the Virginia Demonstration Project (VDP). The outreach programs have reached over 38,000 students through in-class programs and summer academies. The summer academies have expanded beyond the original Dahlgren STEM Summer Academy to include Quantico, Hampton Roads, and Virginia Beach STEM Summer Academies. Due to the program's eight year span of service within more than 17 schools, the STEM Education Alliance has had the opportunity to developed a longitudinal focus. In response to budgetary and manpower issues, The STEM Education Alliance has also developed a Blended Virtual Mentoring protocol. In 2012, STEM Education Alliance began additional evaluations of the national Seaperch program in Virginia and Maryland.
