In 2012, STEM Education Alliance began additional evaluations of the national Seaperch program in Virginia and Maryland. SeaPerch is a hands-on STEM activity that allows students to create an underwater robot while learning to use tools and problem solving skills. SeaPerch can be implemented in an in-school or out-of-school setting. The curriculum for SeaPerch meets national and state learning standards. The SeaPerch program assists teachers with integrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) activities into their classrooms while providing opportunities for STEM career discussions.
General Conclusions of the 2012-13 Evaluation
The SeaPerch program is popular with both students and teachers for its hands-on approach. Students indicated a positive change in attitude towards science and engineering in general as well as careers in science and engineering. Review of transcripts revealed an overwhelming interest among students and teachers in working with tools such as a drill and a soldering iron. Students who participated in SeaPerch indicated an increase in knowledge of what STEM professionals do in their jobs.
