Beginning in 2011, the STEM Education Alliance has collaborated with Naval personnel to deliver a one-week STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) summer academy that has been held at Quantico Middle/High School, located on the Marine Corp Base in Quantico, Virginia. In June 2014, the Fourth Annual STEM Summer Academy, which supports the DoDEA curriculum standards, was a notable success. Forty students teamed up with 15 teachers, 4 Engineering interns and 12 scientists and engineers for a successful summer academy experience. The activities for 2014 were different from previous years’ to give the students that have previously attended the Academy new experiences. The 2014 activities included LEGO’s Green City Challenge, an infectious disease transmission laboratory, a bridge building activity, a card tower activity, and a buoyancy activity. Through these hands-on challenges, students explored physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, robotics, and mathematics in an engaging, high energy environment.
