A one-week STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Summer Academy was held at Corporate Landing Middle School, July 15-18, 2013. The event was a Department of Defense Education Activity collaborative effort between the Virginia Beach County Public Schools and the STEM Education Alliance. The Academy invited 60 middle school students from Corporate Landing Middle School and Landstown Middle School to engage in an action packed camp experience. The Va. Beach Summer STEM Academy is designed to develop team work, and problem solving skills while using math and science to solve challenges and explore career opportunities in STEM related fields. Each student team partnered with a teacher and a scientist or engineer from the Combat Direction Systems Activity-Dam Neck. Together they competed in the Tower Build Challenge, the Water Rocket Challenge, the Buoyancy Challenge and an Electronics Challenge. Through these hands-on challenges, students explored physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, robotics, and mathematics in an engaging, high energy environment.
